Adjunct Instructor in Education: K-5 Mathematics Methods

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Bluffton University Department of Education is seeking an experienced and student-centered Adjunct Faculty member to teach K–5 Mathematics Methods courses within the Educator Preparation Program. The successful candidate will bring expertise in elementary mathematics instruction and a demonstrated commitment to preparing future educators to teach mathematics effectively, confidently, and equitably.

The instructor will provide preservice teachers with research-based instructional strategies, practical classroom applications, and opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, implement, assess, and differentiate high-quality mathematics instruction for students in grades K–5.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Teach an undergraduate K–5 Mathematics Methods course in accordance with college and program standards.
  • Prepare and deliver engaging, evidence-based instruction focused on effective mathematics teaching practices for elementary learners.
  • Model instructional strategies and pedagogical approaches appropriate for students in grades K–5.
  • Guide teacher candidates in developing mathematics lesson plans, learning activities, assessments, and instructional sequences aligned with state and national mathematics standards.
  • Support teacher candidates in understanding mathematical concepts, student mathematical thinking, and common misconceptions.
  • Address differentiated instruction and strategies for meeting the needs of diverse learners, including students with varying levels of mathematical readiness.
  • Integrate problem solving, mathematical reasoning, discourse, representation, fluency, and conceptual understanding into methods instruction.
  • Incorporate appropriate technology, manipulatives, and other instructional resources to support elementary mathematics learning.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback on assignments, lesson plans, and other course-related work.
  • Maintain accurate course records and comply with college policies, procedures, and academic expectations.
  • Collaborate with education faculty and contribute to the continued development of the teacher preparation program as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Master’s degree in Education or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Five or more years of successful teaching experience in mathematics at the K–5 level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective elementary mathematics pedagogy and instructional practices.
  • Strong understanding of elementary mathematics content and the developmental needs of K–5 learners.
  • Experience designing and implementing standards-aligned mathematics instruction and assessment.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching mathematics methods or supervising preservice teachers in a teacher preparation program.
  • Experience working with adult learners, teacher candidates, or professional development programs.
  • Knowledge of current research and best practices in elementary mathematics education.
  • Familiarity with state and national mathematics standards, including the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
  • Experience integrating educational technology into mathematics instruction.
  • Current or prior elementary teaching licensure/certification.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

The position includes approximately twelve hours of in-person classes and labs per week plus attendance at meetings and other events on campus each week. Lab work includes some physical labor demands. Some occasional travel off campus may be needed for conferences and/or off campus meetings.
