How to Have a Successful Virtual College Visit
While the best way to really know if a college is right for you is to physically tour the campus and meet students, professors, and coaches in person, we understand that sometimes a school you're looking at might be a little far to drive to if you're still on the fence, especially if it's out of state.
That's not a problem! Many schools now offer a virtual option you can find when you sign up for a visit on the university's website. Here are our best tips to help you have a successful virtual visit.
Prepare!
Just like a regular visit, know what to expect. Especially since you won't be able to see it in person, research a little about the town or city the college is located in. Is there a vibrant downtown? Are there restaurants, doctors, churches and things to do? Look it up on Google Maps to help you get a visual and try to imagine yourself spending time there.
As well as getting to know the town, have a couple questions ready to ask your admissions counselor. Is there something specific about your major you want to know? Are the clubs or student organizations that sound interesting to you? This can help you make the most out of your visit.
Use a large screen
If possible, use an iPad or computer/laptop for your virtual visit. This will help you see everything better when you go on your virtual tour and when you meet people over Zoom.
Find a quiet spot
Make sure you're in a quiet place and minimize distractions so you can concentrate on your visit. If you can, take yourself to another room away from noisy friends and family, or ask them to let you have the kitchen table for yourself for an hour while you have your visit.
Go on a Virtual campus tour
Many colleges will have a virtual tour on their website where you can explore campus at your convenience. Most of these virtual tours include photos, videos and descriptions, oftentimes connected to a campus map.
Ask to meet professors and coaches
Make arrangements with your admission counselor to meet with a professor or coach during your college visit. Meeting with a professor, even over Zoom, can help you figure out if the major you're interested in is for you and understand what that would look like to study it in college.
If you're interested in athletics, meeting with a coach will be helpful in the recruiting process because you'll get to know the coaching staff and learn more about competing at the collegiate level. It's a good idea to have questions ready to ask each person you plan to meet.
Follow on Social media
Follow the universities, clubs, sports and majors you’re interested in on social media. It’s a great way to learn more about your options and opportunities and imagine your place there.
Visit in person
If you completed a virtual visit and liked the school, consider returning in person. It's one thing to see a school on a screen, but being there yourself is the best way to tell if a college is the right fit for you. You get to witness campus life, talk to students, try the food, and start to picture yourself there.
