Courtney Benton
Sociology major with minors in political science and criminal justice
Englewood, Ohio
Graduation year: 2028

Why did you choose Bluffton?
I chose Bluffton because it is close to home with distance in between. Bluffton gave me a sense of belonging and it is perfect when it comes to one-on-one student teacher ratio. I was able to join multiple clubs and become a cheerleader in my first year.

Why did you choose your major?
I chose my major because I was interested in learning how society works while also wanting to learn more about social relationships and behaviors for how they affect people. My classes are extremely helpful when it comes to my major because I have gained a lot of background knowledge on why certain research was conducted to better examine people's behaviors and actions. Additionally, I was able to take classes that showed me what I do and do not like or would want to do without affecting my path to my sociology degree.

What type of job do you want following graduation?
I would love to have a job as a government official or advocate for women experiencing domestic violence or human trafficking. My calling is to be someone who stands up for others and to do what is right no matter the cost. Long term, I would love to have had the experience of being an advocate, analyst, investigator and government official.

Tell us about Bluffton’s faculty, staff and coaches.
Bluffton’s faculty and staff are dedicated to helping me reach my future goals. I have amazing advisors and professors that are dedicated to making sure I am in the right field and taking the correct classes to receive my degree. Evan Skilliter, Christopher Morrisey and Lamar Nisly have helped me tremendously.

What student organizations are you part of?
I am a part of Social Work Club, Peace Club and Crew. It is important for me to be active on campus because I love meeting new people, staying busy, and trying out new things to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Are you a student-athlete?
I did cheer as a first-year and it was amazing. I loved the amount of support and confidence I gained from being on the cheer squad. It made me into a better leader, supporter, encourager and team player. I will forever be grateful for the cheer squad of 2024–25.

Have you completed an internship or other hands-on learning experience?

I had a videography and web design internship at the Northmont Area Chamber of Commerce. I recorded interviews, media coverage and assisted in publishing web design for the Northmont Area Chamber of Commerce. The experience taught me that I should take on more risks and opportunities to better myself and gain more knowledge in areas that I am unfamiliar.

Is there anything else about being a student at Bluffton that you would like to share?
Being a student at Bluffton is more than just being a number. Being a student of Bluffton is a privilege because you are welcomed no matter where you come from and have the opportunity of making a change within the community with the support and help of others.
