Bluffton University to host second annual Health Sciences and STEM Day

High school students interested in health sciences, natural sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics will have the opportunity to explore their interests firsthand during Bluffton University’s Health Sciences and STEM Day on Saturday, Nov. 7.

The free event invites prospective students and their families to campus for a day of hands-on activities, faculty interaction and exploration of Bluffton’s health sciences and STEM programs. Students will participate in three academic stations covering areas including biology, chemistry, environmental science, nutrition and dietetics, nursing, mathematics, physics and pre-engineering.

“Health sciences and STEM fields are constantly changing, and we want students to see what it means to study these subjects in a hands-on environment,” said Dr. Angie Montel, chair of the Department of Health Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics and professor of biology. “Our faculty are excited to give students a chance to ask questions, explore our labs and facilities, and see how what they learn in the classroom connects to real careers.”

The event also gives students an opportunity to experience the personalized approach that is central to a Bluffton education. Following the academic sessions, students and families can tour the campus and enjoy lunch with Bluffton faculty before an optional tour of the university’s Nature Preserve.

“Events like Health Sciences and STEM Day allow students to move beyond simply reading about a program and actually experience it,” said Dr. Mary Robinson, vice president and dean of academic affairs. “They can meet the professors who may become their mentors, explore our learning spaces, and begin to picture themselves as part of the Bluffton community. We want students to leave with a better understanding of both the opportunities available to them and the people who will support them along the way.”

The event reflects Bluffton’s emphasis on combining academic preparation, real-world experiences and strong faculty relationships while supporting Ohio’s growing need for STEM professionals. Bluffton University launched Health Sciences and STEM Day to align with the state’s investment in STEM education and workforce development. JobsOhio estimates Ohio will need more than 540,000 additional STEM and technically skilled workers over the next decade. As a Choose Ohio First participating institution, Bluffton provides scholarships and hands-on educational opportunities that help prepare students for careers in Ohio’s STEM workforce.
