Assistant Professor in History
POSITION SUMMARY:
Bluffton University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History. The appointment will be made by the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Humanities.
We seek a historian specializing in United States history (any period) with a demonstrated secondary field in at least one non-U.S. region. The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate history curriculum by teaching both U.S. and World History survey courses, offering upper-level electives in their areas of specialization, advising students, participating in faculty governance, and contributing to the intellectual and community life of Bluffton University.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Faculty Responsibilities
- Teach 23–25 credit hours per academic year in the general education curriculum and the undergraduate history curriculum, distributed across the fall and spring semesters.
- Faculty appointments are based on a nine-month contract, beginning approximately two weeks prior to the start of fall classes and concluding after final grades are submitted in May.
- Occasional meetings or responsibilities may occur during the summer; faculty are expected to remain in contact with the university via email during this period.
- Advise undergraduate students and support student academic and professional development.
- Participate in faculty governance and contribute to departmental, university, and community initiatives.
- Maintain an active scholarly agenda appropriate to a teaching-focused liberal arts institution.
- Engage in service to the university and community as appropriate for tenure-track and tenured faculty at Bluffton University
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching the following courses:
Core and General Education Courses
- HIS 200: Foundations of American Civilization
- HIS 201: The Making of Contemporary America
- HIS 210: World History I
- HIS 212: World History II
Methods and Capstone Courses
In addition, the successful candidate will offer upper-level courses in US history as well as a non-U.S. field (regional, thematic, or comparative) and may also contribute, as appropriate, to offerings in Political Science or Geography.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum
- Doctorate in History, Master’s Degree in History may be considered.
- Evidence of an active scholarly agenda appropriate to a teaching-focused undergraduate institution.
- Primary specialization in U.S. history (any period).
- Demonstrated ability to teach survey courses in World History.
- Secondary field in at least one non-U.S. region.
- Experience teaching in higher education.
- Ability to teach survey courses in Political Science or Geography preferred.
Skill/Abilities: Proficiency in or ability to learn learning management system software (Moodle).
Physical Demands/Work Environment: Primarily a sedentary position with approximately twelve hours of in-person classes per week plus attendance in meetings and other events on campus each week. Some occasional travel off-campus may be needed for conferences and/or off campus meetings.
