Student Senate invests in long-term campus improvement

When students return to campus in August, they will be able to enjoy a newly paved sidewalk along the Riley Creek. Cement was poured for the pathway in June and has been put into use this summer during campus tours, freshman orientation and summer conferences.

This is the first step of Bluffton University Student Senate’s plan of investing in improvements of campus.

Katey Ebaugh, Student Senate president for the 2016-17 academic year explained that she was pleased that the work was finalized and could be of use to students currently residing on campus.

“At the beginning of the year I had been in conversation with some students about the rough walkway along the Riley that was still popularly used by Ropp and Bren-Dell students. It was often very muddy and had many pot holes which made it unpleasant to walk on.”

Senators began working with Mustaq Ahmed, director of buildings and grounds, to come up with a proposal for the project that was not only approved by the President’s Cabinet but also passed through the student body.

The sidewalk project was entirely funded by the Student Senate endowment. Additional funds will be used during the upcoming school year to pay for other improvement projects.

Ebaugh says Student Senate is always looking to research and take on new projects. The group believes there is much potential in the next school year and are always welcoming to additional ideas from the student body.

“Overall, Student Senate is dedicated to serving all of Bluffton University in long-term and short-term ways,” said Ebaugh. “We have been stewards of the generous amount of money allocated to the club and hope that it betters all students now and in the future. We are happy to give and give back to the students and school in the best ways we know how. There are many ways the money could be spent, and this past year, this project is what Senate accomplished.”
