How wide and how many?

When putting shingles back on the side of the house,
you sometimes need to find one that is, say 6 1/4 inches wide ....
That is not easily done when all shingles are piled up in a jumble!
Questions:
- What rules about "good" histograms does this violate?
- Why does it not turn out to be nice and "normal"?
