	Medieval: Gothic Period (about 1100-1300 CE)

The development of the Gothic cathedral is also associated with France. In general, Gothic cathedrals have the following characteristics:

a lighter, less heavy appearance than Romanesque churches
high vaults with pointed, rather than rounded arches
flying buttresses as a support system
taller windows in the clerestory and thus more light in the interior
stained glass windows
and in later Gothic cathedrals:
rose windows above main entrances.
