Late goal gives Anderson 3-2 victory over Beavers
October 14, 2006
ANDERSON, Indiana - The Bluffton University women's soccer team (1-12, 1-5 HCAC) tried to overcome an early first half deficit, but Anderson University (4-8-1) found the net once more in the second half for a 3-2 win over the Beavers on Saturday, October 14, 2006.
Less than four minutes into the first half, Anderon's Sara Ferguson used a pass from Ruthie Castor to put the Ravens on the board. Seven minutes later, Ferguson found Mary Schueneman open as Anderson opened a quick 2-0 lead in the eleventh minute. The Ravens made the two goal advantage hold up through the first half as the Beavers found themselves down, 2-0, at the break.
Much like the Ravens in the opening stanza, Bluffton notched two quick goals to start the second period. Freshman Meghan Forquer (North Canton/Green) punched it across the goal line in minute 50 and Elyse Burckhart (Telford, Pa./Souderton) knotted the contest at two less than seven minutes later.
With Bluffton looking to send the game into overtime, the Ravens' Mary Schueneman ended the upset bid when she took a Sara Ferguson corner kick and converted, giving the Ravens a 3-2 lead with less than three minutes remainig in the contest. The Beavers were unable to force the extra period as Anderson held on for the win.
The Ravens outshot Bluffton 11 to four, including six shots on goal to three for the Beaveers. Forquer led the Beavers with three shots, two on goal, including Bluffton's first goal in the second half. Goalkeeper Ashley Bloom (Tiffin/Calvert) notched three saves in the loss.
Bluffton returns to action on Tuesday, October 17, when it travels to Angola, Ind. to face the Tri-State Thunder at 4 p.m.
