Scotland Street School--page 2 (of four pages)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh
1903-6

Views of the rear--the south, with the playground divided by a fence to separate boys and girls at recess

The symmetrical rear is almost uniform with 18 classroom windows, varied only by the two central bays and the outermost ones with design motifs.

The two central bays with thistle and tree of life motifs

According to Crawford, "the stylized central images are a Scottish thistle and a Tree of Life, composed of Viennese-inspired squares and triangles" (118).
