Roofless Church

Philip Johnson
1960

This so-called roofless church is located in the historic utopian settlement of New Harmony. The "church" is actually a large walled garden which includes within its boundaries a small structure with an oculus at the top.

Jacques Lipchitz' Notre Dame de Liese (Our Lady of Joy) is located under the oculus. See also Lipchitz' Peace on Earth, a similar work in Los Angeles.

See also Richard Meier's Atheneum, the Visitors' Center, in New Harmony.
