Palazzo Spannocchieschi (Monte dei Paschi)

Giuliano da Maiano
c. 1476

This is one of the buildings which housed the bank called Monte dei Paschi, founded in 1472, and claiming to be the oldest bank in the world. The three story building is typical palazzo structure. (See, for example, Alberti's Palazzo Rucellai and Michelozzo's Palazzo Medici-Riccardi.) The horizontal emphasis is punctuated by the string courses between registers and the cornice is elaborate, in this case decorated with busts of famous Italians in medallions. The windows are double but surmounted with round arches, similar to those in the Florentine Renaissance palaces.
