LESSON TITLE: Writing Poetry, Putting Words together Creatively

OBJECTIVES: to invite students to stretch their imaginations, to trigger creative ideas and use language creatively. To help students appreciate poetry.

MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT: Worksheet with "I'm an amiable dragon" p. 6-7. construction paper, colored pencils, scissors, blackboard, colored chalk, paste.

MOTIVATION : Allow students chose sounds, colors and images for their assigned group of poems.

RESOURCES: Textbook of poems, Jack Prelutsky, "The Dragons Are Singing Tonight." Dictionary , CDs, recordings of birds, airplanes, wind or rain sounds, enlarged pictures of dragon p. 6- 7.

ACTIVITY : Divide class of 20 students into 4 groups of five. Review p. 6- 7. Group chose a student to read poem p. 6- 7 aloud to group. Ask students to close their eyes and listen to group leader read aloud.

Each group rearrange wording for "I'm an amiable dragon," draw a group picture of sounds, and colors.

Groups report back to class 15 minutes before dismissal with new arrangement and group picture.

EVALUATION: I used cooperative learning approach by having students in groups with peers. Assigned a student with adequate reading ability to each group to read aloud. All students in group participated with selecting colors for drawings, and words.

2.  LESSON TITLE: Writing Poetry, Putting Words together Creatively

and enjoy poetry. Encourage student to brain storm and work as a team.

MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT: Worksheet with "1 wish I had a dragon," p. 12-13. construction paper, scissors, colored pencils, paste, popcicle sticks, chalkboard, colored chalk.

MOTIVATION : Encourage students to change wording, colors and change the name of the dragon to another animal.

RESOURCES: Poems by Jack Prelutsky, "The Dragons Are Singing Tonight." Dictionary, CD's, recordings of birds, airplanes, wind or animal sounds, enlarged pictures of dragon p. 12-13.

ACTIVITY: Each group of students make models or puppets of dragons and other animals. Group chose a student to read "I wish I had a dragon" p. 12-13 aloud. Each group report back to class 15 minutes before dismissal with puppets and new wording arrangements.

MOTIVATION: Encourage students to become involved in choral reading, improvise background music, sing softly during reading of poetry reading.

RESOURCES: Poems by Jack Prelutsky, "The Dragons Are Singing Tonight," recording of "Old Mac Donald," enlarged pictures of dragon

p. 14-15.

ACTIVITY: Students in each group chose an animal from Mac Donald's Farm to improvise in the poem. Each group write the lyrics "I made a mechanical dragon" to the tune of Old Mac Donald. A student from each group will demonstrate their version to class the last 15 minutes of class.

MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT: Worksheet with words and phrases from "My dragon wasn't feeling good" p. 18-19.

*He/she had a nasty chill, blue nose was running, *doctor, pulse, temperature, turpentine, shivering, *neighborhood, gasoline, red, ill.

Construction paper, colored pencils, blackboard, colored chalk.

MOTIVATION: Encourage students to change wordings, use words or phrases that come into their heads and not worry if it does not make sense or rhyme.

ACTIVITY : Student in each group read words and phrases from worksheet aloud. Each group rewrite words and phrases from worksheet list and report back to class 15 minutes before dismissal.

5. LESSON TITLE: Writing Poetry, Putting Words Together Creatively

 OBJECTIVES: to invite students to stretch their imaginations, to trigger creative ideas and use language creatively. To help students appreciate poetry.

MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT: Worksheet with words and phrases from "Nasty little dragonsong" p. 16-17.

Construction paper, colored pencils, blackboard, colored chalk, scissors, and rulers.

MOTIVATION: Encourage students to change wordings, use words or phrases that come into their heads, and do not worry ifit does not make sense.

RESOURCES: Poems by Jack Prellutsky, "The Dragons Are Singing Tonight." Dictionary, CDs, enlarged pictures of dragon p. 16-17.

ACTIVITY: Chose a student in each group to read poem (p.16) aloud. Pass out numbers and assign students in each group every third line in poem and a number (1-5). Blow a whistle and have each number from group read aloud in unison when called.
