In June 1999, my wife Marlyce and I spent three weeks traveling around Germany, Holland, France, Switzerland, and Austria, visiting the usual sites, places important to Mennonite history, and some of the places in Switzerland, Alsace, and the Palatinate where my Gundy, Strubhar and Stalter ancestors lived.  The map above shows our itinerary (start at Hamburg and go west from there_.  The photos were arranged to accompany a presentation in which I read from two essays written later in the summer—the first about the Stalter estates in the Palatinate (near Zweibrucken and Saarbrucken) and the second about cathedrals, churches, and caves as places of worship.
