Power, privilege and poverty will be explored by venturing into the various political, economic and historical foundations of the five boroughs of New York City. In addition, service learning projects in several neighborhoods in the Brooklyn and Washington Heights areas will be the focus of weeks two and three. Students will visit the cultural and historical arenas, including museums, and various neighborhoods of New York, including Queens, Little Italy, Chinatown, SoHo, the East Village, Brooklyn and the Bronx.
Students will reside in accommodations near Columbia University during week one, experiencing a revitalized immigrant neighborhood; and during the second half live in Tribeca, in lower Manhattan, site of the resurging Ground Zero neighborhood in the area below Canal Street and near Wall Street.
