Course Description

This course is a survey of women artists from the medieval period to the present. The course will attempt to view these artists in their historical/sociological contexts and will consider not only traditional "high art" media but women working in the craft traditions as well.

In addition, this site has extensive links to artists—in addition to the artists and works discussed in the text. You are expected to review these web pages regularly. (The password-protected part will be "in process" all term.) Some of the links are password-protected—indicated by a small stop sign icon. Once you click on these images, in order to view them, you will need to fill out the menu which appears on the screen. For user name, type womenartists (lower case without a space); for password, type bcwa (for Bluffton College Women Artists).

Course Expectations/Requirements

Regular class attendance—it is impossible to make up slide lectures
Reading completed by the due date
Slide quizzes on alternate Fridays, beginning in week 2
Midterm—part in-class, part take-home long essay
One slide lecture presented to the whole class (to be explained)
Paper or web-site (the latter preferred) on the subject of your slide lecture
Comprehensive final exam
