Purpose of a Cover Letter

  1. It captures the interest of the reader;
  2. It states what you think you can do for the reader - what is it you think you can contribute specifically to his/her company or institution;
  3. It calls attention to, highlights, or expands upon information you are including in your resume, letters of recommendation, or other credentials;
  4. It directs your resume to the appropriate individual.
