Communication has a rich history. Its beginnings in ancient Greece focused on the rhetoric or the available means of persuasion. Today the study of communication is devoted to determining how people arrive at shared meanings through the interchange of messages. Since communication is a process, many aspects of human life can become a center for communication study. These areas would include but are not limited to communication from an interpersonal, small-group, organizational, public, mass media and language/symbolic codes perspective. Persons interested in a career in communications (with an "s" on the end) are often interested in fields of study and employment concerned with graphic arts, computer technology and technical communication devices. This is a different field of study from those interested in communication (without the "s" on the end) degree or career.
