The field of art, like music, is a unique one in that it provides the opportunity to combine an art form with business or other fields. Although it is possible to make a living as a self-employed studio artist, most graduates with an art major secure employment in applied fields such as graphic arts, design or teaching. Design artists are those who are concerned with the function and appearance of articles for everyday use, as well as the places in which people live and work. They design products, plan and execute window displays, illustrate publications and take photographs. Graphic artists illustrate everything from medical journals and magazines to container graphics and billboards. Teaching certification in art may be obtained for grades K-12, with appropriate education courses.
