In the bronze sculpture The Last First Draft, artist Gregg Luginbuhl '71 of Bluffton depicts his love of literature and writing. He captures the visual energy of creating and learning evident in a handwritten manuscript's first draft with all its alterations, doodles and margin illustrations.
"Through this work in bronze, I have elevated one of my rough drafts into the realm of sculpture. First scribbled in a Rome hotel room, the document, though difficult to read literally in this form, is a poem titled In The Ruin. As a student at Bluffton, I benefited from an emphasis on writing across the curriculum. In this work, I would like to recognize my English professors in particular for cultivating in me a love of literature and writing, a gift that I continue to cherish," said Luginbuhl.
Luginbuhl, a 1971 Bluffton graduate, earned a master of fine arts from the University of Montana and has been a professor of art at Bluffton University since 1984. He has exhibited pottery and sculpture in regional and national exhibitions. His work is included in many public and private collections.
