Bluffton, Ohio - The Beavers dropped the Heartland Conference tri-match opener to HCAC newcomer Rose-Hulman by a match score of 6-3 on Saturday, September 9, 2006. Following the Engineers win over Defiance College, Bluffton took care of business, 7-2, vs. the Yellow Jackets. With the victory, the Beavers improved to 1-4, 1-3 in HCAC action.
Rachel Huckaba (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) and Jenna Kauffman (Wooster/Central Christian) both picked up straight set singles victories against Rose-Hulman at no. 5 and no. 6 singles, respectively. The Beavers were extremely competitive in the match as Courtney Hodson (Washington Court House/Washington Senior) went down in three sets at no. 3 singles while Chelsey Wenger (Bellefontaine/Bellefontaine) and Lisa Cherry (Waterville/Anthony Wayne) dropped tight contests at no. 2 and no. 4 singles. Cherry and Hodson picked up the lone doubles victory for Bluffton by a score of 8-2. Rose-Hulman was led at no. 1 singles by freshman Sam Danesis who did not drop a game at singles all day.
Following Rose-Hulman's triumph over the Yellow Jackets, Bluffton put together a dominating performance against Defiance College. Five Beaver victories in singles propelled Bluffton to a 7-2 victory in the final match of the day. Wenger and Kauffman lost only a single game each en route to victories at no. 2 and no. 6 singles. Hodson was victorious at no. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Cherry picked up a straight set victory at no. 4 singles. Huckaba went to three sets before winning the rubber set, 6-1. Devra Doan (Wooster/Central Christian) and Huckaba picked up an 8-4 victory at no. 3 doubles while Cherry and Hodson combined on an 8-6 win at no. 2 doubles.
The Beavers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they travel to Ohio Northern. The indoor match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
