Manchester downs Bluffton 9-0

BLUFFTON, OHIO - The Bluffton College women’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to defending HCAC champion Manchester College, Wednesday, September 10.  The Beavers picked up one set victory in the match, as they continued to show improvement through the early part of the 2003 season.

The one set victory for the Beavers came at the #5 singles position, where junior Jenni Blose won the first set against Anna Merryman, 6-4, before falling in the final two sets.  Another tough performance came once again from freshman Jenna Liechty, who took on the defending #1 singles HCAC champion, Kristen Frick.  Liechty and Frick battled through many long games, as the two top players both showed tremendous baseline play and an ability to play aggressively throughout the match.  Another top performer in singles action for Bluffton came from sophomore Kara Schrock.  Schrock played a strong second set in her match at the #3 position, displaying arguably her strongest baseline play thus far in the young season.

The best doubles performance of the day for the Beavers came from the #1 team of Liechty and junior Stephanie Keefe, who battled Manchester’s top duo of Frick and Weybright in another match filled with long points and games.  The pair was able to pick up a couple of games in the middle of the match, while showing promise for the remainder of the season.

The Beavers now have an overall record of 1-3 and play next at the DePauw Fall Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
