Sept. 16, 2008
ANGOLA, Ind. - The Bluffton University women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to previously winless Trine University on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008. A pair of first half goals proved too much to overcome as Bluffton fell to 1-3-1 on the season while Trine improved to 1-5 overall with the Thunder's first victory since 2005.
The Thunder went up 1-0 midway through the first half when Kara Hershberger found the back of the net in minute 25. Seven minutes later she hit paydirt once again, giving the home team a 2-0 lead.
Bluffton pounded the Thunder with 25 shots, including nine on target to just 14 total attempts by Trine, but the Beavers were unable to convert on their chances as Trine held Bluffton scoreless. The Beavers forced four corner kicks, one more than the home team, and Bluffton was whistled for 11 fouls compared to just four for Trine.
Freshman Alex Jess (Piqua/Piqua), who scored two goals in Bluffton's tie at Rochester on Saturday, Sept. 13, paced the visitors with six shots, including three on target. Fellow freshmen Catie White (Lima/Central Catholic) and Monique Devol (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) added four and three shots, respectively. Keeper Katy Wisby (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) collected four saves in the loss.
Bluffton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when the Beavers travel to Thiel College. The contest vs. the Tomcats is slated to start at 2 p.m.
