Women's basketball loses two at Heidelberg Tourny

The Bluffton College women’s basketball team opened the 2003-04 season at the Heidelberg Tip-Off Tournament last weekend. The Beavers finished with a 0-2 mark at the tournament, narrowly falling to The Apprentice School 50-47 and losing to Heidelberg 79-40.
Bluffton 47, The Apprentice School 50
The Bluffton College women’s basketball team (0-1) opened up to a very close game, but couldn’t pull out the win on Friday night. The final score was The Apprentice School 50, Bluffton 47. Bluffton put up a good fight to the Builders as The Apprentice School has been the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national champion two out of the last three years.
Early in the game Bluffton found themselves down 13-7 to go on a 7-2 run to tie the game 15-15 with 5:53 left in the first. The Beavers then led until two minutes left in the first half, 18-17, to find themselves down by two going into halftime, 21-19. In the second half Bluffton would tie the score twice but never regain the lead. With 1:39 left to play the Beavers would be down 48-45 when Schaller picked up the foul. She would hit both free throws to tighten the score to 48-47 in favor of The Apprentice School. After the Builders took possession Tiffany Johnson of The Apprentice School would make a bucket with five seconds left for the final of 50-47.
Sophomore Karin Schaller (Jenera/Arlington) had a double-double for the first time of her career. She posted 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Beavers. Senior Lindsay Bacon (Troy/Troy) was the other Beaver in double digit scoring with 14 points for the evening. Freshman Tanya Rickenberg (Defiance/Paulding) led the team with five assists.
Bluffton 40, Heidelberg 79
The Bluffton College women’s basketball team (0-2) dropped Saturday night’s contest to Heidelberg College 79-40. Heidelberg moves to 2-0 on the year. The game concluded play in the Heidleberg Tip-Off Tourney.
Rickenberg led the Beavers in scoring on Saturday, posting 18 points along with three rebounds and three steals. Schaller for the second night was in double digits with 10 points and led the team in rebounds with seven, throwing in four blocks.
Two Beavers were honored for their efforts in the tournament. Freshman Tanya Rickenberg (Defiance/Paulding) and sophomore Karin Schaller (Jenera/Arlington) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Bluffton is currently led in scoring by sophomore Karin Schaller and freshman Tanya Rickenberg who each average 12.5 points per game each. Schaller also currently leads the Beavers in rebounding with 12.5 rebounds per game while Rickenberg leads the Beavers in assists with six. Senior Lindsay Bacon leads the team with four three-pointers.
Bluffton will travel to Muskingum this Wednesday for their only game of the week. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
