Beavers still looking for first Heartland Conference win

   The Bluffton College women’s basketball team (0-16, 0-6 HCAC) were defeated last week by Mount St. Joseph 67-49 and Anderson 69-42. The Beavers will travel to rival Defiance College on Wednesday. Tip off for the game is scheduled for 7 pm. Bluffton will be back home on Saturday when they take on Hanover College. Start time for the contest is 1 pm.

MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 67, BLUFFTON 49
The Bluffton College women’s basketball team (1-15, 0-5 HCAC) was defeated by Mount St. Joseph (7-8, 3-2 HCAC) 67-49 on Wednesday night.

Freshman Tanya Rickenberg (Defiance/Paulding) led Bluffton on the contest with 14 points, shooting an incredible 12-of-12 from the free throw line.  Senior Lindsay Bacon (Troy/Troy) posted 10 points for the evening. Sophomore Karin Schaller (Jenera/Arlington) led the team with six rebounds and five blocks for the game.

Leading Mount St. Joseph on the night was Katie Swart with 18 points. Virginia Grace chipped in another 10 for the Lions.

Mount St. Joseph steadily controlled the ball game from the beginning, going up with a 9-0 run to start the game. The Beavers would not give up however as they tightened the lead to 27-22 midway through the first half. The five point lead would be the closest that Bluffton would come to the Lions for the remainder of the game. Heading into halftime the MSJ led 35-26.

Hurting the Beavers were the 31 turnovers in the game compared to the Lion’s 18. Mount St. Joseph converted 31 points off of Bluffton turnovers for the night. Bluffton shot 29 percent for the game to the Lion’s 39 percent. MSJ grabbed 44 rebounds to the Beavers 38.

ANDERSON 69, BLUFFTON 42
The Bluffton College women’s basketball team (1-16, 0-6 HCAC) were defeated by the Anderson Ravens (11-5, 4-2 HCAC) 69-42 Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers came out strong in the first half of play to lead by as many as ten points in the game. The momentum seemed to stop the Ravens leading scorer Angel Hall dead in her tracks. Heading into the locker rooms for halftime, Bluffton found themselves up 27-18. The second half took another direction as Anderson came out with a 22-2 run to overwhelm the Beavers. Anderson’s Hall would go 5-of-7 from the 3-point arc in the second period of play to lead the Ravens. Bluffton could not overcome the early lead for the rest of the period as they were defeated 69-42.

Freshman Tanya Rickenberg (Defiance/Paulding) led Bluffton with 13 points for the day. Junior Christina Champion (Oregon/Clay) was the other Beaver in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Karin Schaller (Jenera/Arlington) had a team high nine rebounds and three blocks.

Leading the Ravens was Angel Hall with 31 points. Emily Bailey posted 12 points with Stacie Jennings rounded off the double digits for Anderson with 11 for the contest. 

Anderson led on the boards with 41 rebounds to Bluffton’s 26 for the day. The Ravens shot 46 percent in the game to the Beaver’s 36 percent. Turnovers hurt Bluffton again as they committed 17 for the game. The Ravens would then convert 18 points off of Beaver turnovers.

TEAM STATISTICS
   As a team, Bluffton currently ranks first in the Heartland Conference with112 blocked shots on the year. Bluffton also currently ranks at the top in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to a .375 shooting mark.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS  
   Senior Lindsay Bacon ranks 2nd on Bluffton’s squad in scoring and 10th in the HCAC with 11.5 points per game. Bacon also leads Bluffton and ranks 3rd (tie) in the HCAC with 1.81 3-pointers per game (29 for year).
   Sophomore Karin Schaller currently leads the conference and Division III in blocks with 96 for the season (5.65 per game). She also ranks 2nd in defensive rebounding (7.12 per game), 2nd in rebounds per game (10.6) and 4th in offensive rebounding (3.18). She also ranks 25^th in  Division III in rebounding. Schaller also adds 10.3 points per game, which places her at 17th in the league.  
  Freshman Tanya Rickenberg currently leads the Beavers in scoring and ranks 6th in scoring with 14.1 points per game. Rickenberg also ranks 8th in rebounding in the HCAC with 5.6 rebounds per game and 3rd in assists, averaging 3.76 per game.
