The Bluffton College women’s basketball team dropped both of their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference games last week. On Wed. night, rival Defiance College handed BC an 84-50 loss, while on Sat. afternoon, the Beavers fell to Hanover in a 103-67 shootout to fall to 1-16 on the year and 0-8 in the HCAC.
Bluffton will be looking for its first home win this season as they do battle in Founders Hall twice this week. The Beavers will take on Manchester this Wed. at 7 p.m. before taking on Mt. St. Joseph on Sat., Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. to begin their final month of the season.
Seniors Melissa James (10.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and Lyndsey Robinson (10.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) lead Bluffton in scoring and rebounding, while junior Karen Harris (7.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg) leads the team in steals with 31. Senior Paula Fry leads BC in assists with 37.
Jan. 22: BC 50, Defiance 84
BC dominated Defiance on the boards Wed. night but the host Yellow Jackets took an 84-50 win over the Beavers.
Junior Lindsay Bacon came off the bench to score a team-high 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and add five rebounds and three assists.
A basket by senior Kristen Siller gave Bluffton an 8-7 lead with 13:55 remaining in the first half, but Defiance soon regained the lead and later went on a 16-0 run to go up by 18 with just over a minute left in the first half. DC led 42-26 at the intermission and an 18-2 Jacket run to start the second half proved to be too much to overcome.
Senior Heather Demery tied two career-highs with nine points and six rebounds, while James scored eight points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Cara Young chipped in seven points.
Jan. 25: BC 67, Hanover 103
Bluffton scored the most points in an HCAC game so far this season, but the league’s top-ranked offense, Hanover College, ran away with a 103-67 win Sat. in Founders Hall.
Three BC players scored in double-figures, led by James and Siller with 12 points each. Siller’s point total tied her career high, while Harris chipped in 10 points.
Robinson and Young both added eight points for Bluffton.
Bluffton attempted a season-high 22 three-point shots and hit five of them as James and Fry each had two treys and sophomore Lindsey Delscamp knocked down one. Freshman Karen Schaller grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
