As she embarks on her third year at the helm of the Bluffton University softball team, head coach Holly Spann anticipates another run at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title. In 2005 the Beavers ended the year 22-13 overall, 7-6 in the Heartland Conference. Spann's overall record at Bluffton is 48-21 with a 19-8 mark in the HCAC.
Spann’s first year brought back a winning tradition to Bluffton that she looks to build upon this season. That team produced two All-Americans in pitcher Sarah Betts and outfielder Allison Lange. The team not only found success on the field, but that group excelled in the classroom as well, as it was named an NFCA All-Academic squad. In 2005 the team produced three All-HCAC selections in seniors Allison Lange and Mandy Snider and junior Sarah Betts.
Spann, a 1996 graduate of Bluffton with degrees in Wellness and Communications, was a former standout for the softball team from 1992-1996. She is still fourth in the on-base percentage category (.425 average) in the Bluffton record book. Spann ranks second all-time in career slugging percentage (.478 average).
At the end of her senior year she was awarded the Kathryn E. Little award, which is given each year to the outstanding senior female athlete. After graduation Spann attended Baylor University where she received her master’s degree in Health Education.
Spann coached the traveling Northwest Ohio college summer softball team in 1996 and was the assistant volleyball coach at Lamburth University (Jackson, Tenn.) in 2001. She is also an associate professor in the Health and Physical Education Department at Bluffton University.
Amy Prichard has been named the graduate assistant coach for the Bluffton University volleyball and softball teams for 2005-06.
Prichard is a 2005 graduate of the University of Michigan where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and a minor in health. Prichard played outfield from 2001-2004 for the Wolverines softball team. She helped lead the team to three Big Ten conference
titles and three NCAA college World Series appearances in 2001, 2002, and 2004. Prichard also
played volleyball, softball and basketball at Haslett High School (Haslett, Mich.) where she earned
eight varsity letters.
Prichard fielded her position in the classroom by receiving the Student Athlete Academic Achievement award back-to-back in the 2003 and 2004 spring seasons. She enjoys participating in recreational sports and staying fit by lifting and jogging.
