Softball wins three out of four games on week

The Bluffton University softball team (8-4) won three games in action last week. Last Tuesday, March 22, the Beavers split with Denison as they lost the first game 1-0 in extra innings and won the second game 4-2. Bluffton then picked up two wins against Case Western Reserve on March 28. The team defeated CWRU 2-1 in eight innings and 10-1 in the nightcap.The Beavers will play on Wednesday, March 30, when they travel to Wittenberg College. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m. The team will then host Transylvania University to open their Heartland Conference season on Saturday, April 2. The conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Senior Mandy Snider (Wapakoneta/Wapakoneta) leads the team in several hitting categories with a .350 batting average, nine runs scored, 14 hits, seven RBI’s (runs batted in) and 15 total bases. Sophomore Carrie Weisbecker (Okeana/Ross) ranks second on the team with a .281 batting average. Weisbecker posts nine hits, six runs, 12 total bases and a .375 slugging percentage. Junior Michelle Metzger (Lakeview/Indian Lake) posts a .273 batting average with nine hits and 10 total bases.
Junior pitcher Sarah Betts (Bryan/Bryan) leads the team with a 1.08 ERA and 68 strikeouts. Betts has pitched 65 innings and given up 38 hits and 15 runs. Betts posts a 5-4 record on the mound. Freshman Tonya Dean (Kettering/Fairmount) shows a 3-0 record on the mound with a 1.56 ERA in 18 innings pitched. Dean has struck out three batters, given up 15 hits and five runs against opponents.
