Betts named HCAC player of week for second time of year

BLUFFTON, OHIO – Sophomore Sarah Betts (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) has been named player of the week for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in softball for the week ending April 18, 2004.

The pitcher helped the Beavers take over first place in theSarah Betts HCAC with a weekend sweep of Franklin College. Bluffton beat Franklin with a 8-0 score in both contests and improved to 9-1 in the conference. In the first game against Franklin, Betts posted 11 strikeouts and allowed four hits. She went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBI’s. Betts then threw a one-hit shutout in the second game against the Grizzlies.

For the week, Betts was 3-1 on the mound, with 30 strikeouts and allowed only 10 hits with two earned runs. She is currently 22-4 for the season with a 0.84 ERA and has struck out 219 hitters. Betts ranks nationally in strikeouts, total victories and earned run average. The Beavers (23-5) have now posted more wins than any other team in Bluffton College softball history. The former record for wins in a season was 21.

The Beavers finish the regular season this week with a doubleheader at Defiance on Thursday (3:30 pm start) and at home on Saturday against Anderson (1 pm start).
