Condolences are extended to the family of Ruth E. Burcky, 97 years old, who died May 11 at Mennonite Memorial Home. Mrs. Burcky was the wife of long-time faculty member and legendary football coach Andrew C. A.C. Burcky.
Ruth Burcky was a Home Economics Instructor at Bluffton College from 1947 to 1951. She also taught at Vanlue and Rawson schools. Mrs. Burcky was a member of the First Mennonite Church, Bluffton, a member of the Century Circle; a volunteer at the Et Cetera Shop, and liked to play bridge. She graduated from Bluffton College in the class of 1925. In 1999, Mrs. Burcky was the recipient of the Larry W. Jones Award--Outstanding Fan. The award is presented by Bluffton College to a non-athlete (student, faculty, staff member or citizen) in recognition of interest, support, and significant contributions to Bluffton College Athletics. Mrs. Burcky will be remembered for her genteel manners and style.
Mrs. Burcky is survived by a son, William, (JoAnn) Burcky, BC Class of 1953, Collinsville, Illinois; Jean Ann Burkholder, BC Class of 1951, Columbus, Ohio; and a sister, Mary Ellis; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. today, Monday, May 13, at Chiles & Sons-Laman Funeral Home, Bluffton Chapel. Services begin at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Bluffton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the A.C. and Ruth Burcky Scholarship Fund, Bluffton College, First Mennonite Church or the Mennonite Memorial Home.
