BC group enjoying time in Spain, Beavers prep for game

May 18, 2001; 3:38 p.m. (9:38 a.m. Ohio time)

BARCELONA, Spain -- Enjoying their first full day in Spain today, the group of 104 Bluffton College students, staff and parents have settled into Barcelona after a long trip that began Tuesday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. Strong weather caused several flight delays and cancellations to the extent that the last BC group of travelers finally arrived at our hotel just yesterday at 1:00 in the afternooon. All members of the group are now present and accounted for and are having a positive experience.

This web update is brought to you via an internet cafe in downtown Barcelona as BC students are just finishing a service project this afternoon at a shelter for battered women and children.

Yesterday the group went on a three hour guided tour of Barcelona afternoon and this morning the football team had their first and only practice before the Beavers take on the Fenix Granollers tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. Yesterday morning´s practice was cancelled since half of the group had yet to arrive. Our practice today was held at a local rugby field and was upbeat as the players went in full pads with contact was held to a minimum.

Temperatures have been reaching the low 70s during the day and it has rained off and on since our arrival. Barcelona is certainly an amazing city and the people at Global Football are taking good care of our arrangements.

A beautiful beach is directly across the street from our hotel but the rainy weather and a full itinerary has made it difficult for anyone to spend much time there.

There is an internet cafe down the street from our hotel so I hope to make another update on Sunday with a recap of the game.
