Two Bluffton College softball players have recently been nominated for the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America Team. The two nominated student-athletes are senior Bree Wood, an art major from Wauseon, Ohio, and junior Emily Kurtz, a middle childhood education major from Wooster, Ohio.

A four-year starter for the Beavers, Wood achieved All-Heartland Conference honors last season with a .320 average and 18 RBIs. Wood was a starter on Bluffton’s 1999 Heartland Conference championship team and is hitting .259 so far in 2001.

Kurtz is a three-year starter for the Beavers and is Bluffton’s career ERA leader at 2.30. As a sophomore Kurtz compiled a 2.93 ERA and batted .300 at the plate. This season Kurtz has become the ace of Bluffton’s staff delivering a 1.94 ERA and an 8-5 record. In 88 innings pitched Kurtz has allowed only 19 runs and has 26 strikeouts.

Bluffton is currently 11-14 and will face Manchester College on Wednesday.
