BC splits pair of HCAC double headers

April 16, 2001

Seeing their first Heartland Conference opponents of the season last week, the Bluffton College softball squad split two double headers and is now tied for third place in the league. BC was to have played at Manchester College on Wednesday and will travel to Franklin College on Saturday.

In action last Thursday at Anderson University, junior Emily Kurtz pitched the Beavers to a 3-1 win over the defending HCAC champs and lowered her season ERA under the 2.00 mark. She struck out four batters and allowed just four hits, while leading the offense were Jamie King with two singles, Amber Fitzwater and Steph Rush with a double each and Bree Wood with a triple. Rush and King both collected RBIs in the game.

In the nightcap, Wood poked three singles and Elizabeth Snavely doubled, but the host Raven squad scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 7-3 win. Stacy Herr took the loss but allowed just three earned runs in six innings of work.

On Saturday BC posted a dramatic 2-1 win in ten innings to take the first game of a double header against Mount St. Joseph at Marbeck Field. Pinch runner Paula Fry scored BC’s first run in the sixth inning, then in the bottom of the tenth Jessica Spain laced a game-winning single to score Fitzwater and end the game. Kurtz pitched all ten innings, scattering six hits and striking out five.

In the second game, Anderson came back to take a 9-1 win despite two hits each from King and Fitzwater.

Spain’s .333 average, 24 hits, 12 runs and six doubles all lead the team, while other offensive leaders include Paula Fry (.318), Missy Neal (.317) and Heather Thornton (.312). Elizabeth Snavely has a team-high 11 RBIs and is hitting .297.

Kurtz has lowered her ERA to 1.94 as she sports an 8-5 overall record. She has a team-high 26 strikeouts and opponents are hitting just .230 against her.
