The 1986 men’s tennis team consisted of a group of hard working individuals who came together in an amazing season to achieve what no other Bluffton tennis team has been able to repeat. The team had many high points during this season, but the greatest one of all came when they qualified for the NAIA National Tennis Tournament, an honor earned by winning the NAIA District 22 Tennis Tournament. 
Success was a dream come true for these athletes as the entire team contributed to advance for the national tournament. Team members Hugo Sandberg, Tony Mullet and Mike Frey received NAIA District 22 honors. Coach Pete Yost was named the District 22 coach-of-the-year.
Improving greatly throughout the season, each team member made great strides to help the team with their successes. Sandberg recorded a 17-3 record on the year. Frey tallied a 16-7 win-loss record. Mullet contributed a 12-11 finish. Brant Hilty finished the season with a 6-15 record. Ron Falb played his way to an 8-12 finish. John Watkins ended his season with a 3-9 record.
In doubles action Sandberg and Mullet recorded an 18-3 season. Frey and Hilty finished the year with an even 6-6 doubles record. Falb and Watkins ended the campaign with a 4-8 doubles team record. None of this could have been possible without the help of coach Pete Yost and his attitude of having fun and enjoying the game of tennis.
