Tyson Veidt, a graduate assistant coach under former West Virginia University (WVU) head football coach Rich Rodriguez, is entering his sixth season as Bluffton University’s head football coach. Veidt (pronounced vîte, rhymes with “white”) came to Bluffton after serving one year as defensive coordinator for Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
While at Saint Vincent, Veidt served as linebacker coach and worked with special teams. Prior to Saint Vincent, Veidt spent two years as a defensive graduate assistant at WVU and was a part of the 2004 and 2005 Big East Champion teams, a 2004 Gator Bowl appearance and a 2006 Sugar Bowl win. Veidt has also served in coaching roles at Indiana University and Muskingum College, where he was the defensive coordinator from 2000-03.
“My vision involves developing my current roster of men and adding to that roster through recruitment. My philosophy is to be fundamentally sound in the three phases of football—offense, defense and special teams—and to be disciplined on and off the field,” said Veidt.
The Beavers have improved dramatically during Coach Veidt's tenure at the helm, both on the field and in the classroom. Consecutive seasons with the most Heartland Conference victories in Bluffton history, including the first winning season for the Beavers since 2000, are a testament to work of Coach Veidt and his staff. A total of 12 All-HCAC selections in 2012 which included Bluffton's first-ever Offensive Freshman of the Year, Calib Alexander, was also the most in school history.
Coach Veidt has directed Bluffton to three straight wins over rival Defiance College and the Beavers have also claimed their first victories over Rose-Hulman the past two seasons. His training methods have helped Bluffton play at a high level late in games as evidenced by Bluffton's first overtime, double overtime and triple overtime victories during the past two years. The Beavers were twice named the Ohio College Football Team of the Week in 2012.
With all of Bluffton's seniors in the program having graduated or on track to graduate, Coach Veidt's Academic Success Plan has certainly lived up to its name. The Bluffton football team has the highest GPA in University history and along with that, there are also a record number of football players on the Dean's List. Senior offensive lineman Thomas Gingrich was recently named CoSida Academic All-America, the first football player in Bluffton history to receive that honor. He is one of 11 Academic All-HCAC honorees recognized since Coach Veidt took over the program.
