Bluffton splits with ManchesterApril 7, 2000

The two tops teams in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference did battle Thursday afternoon at Bluffton, resulting in a double header split between the visiting Manchester College Spartan squad and the host BC Beavers.
Both games went into extra innings--a testement to the strength of both squads. Manchester won the first game 2-1 in eight innings, while BC took the nightcap 6-5 in nine innings. Bluffton is now 5-1 in the HCAC, while Manchester is 3-1.
BC found themselves trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Bree Wood launched a solo home run to tie the score and force extra innings. The Spartans plated one run in the top of the eighth inning, then held BC scoreless in the bottom half to claim the win.
Erin Kurtz suffered the loss in a true pitchers dual. She struck out 12 hitters walked none. Kurtz was also Bluffton's leader at the plate, as she collected two of BC's seven hits, both singles.
An RBI single by Wood in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two scored Paula Fry for the winning run in a 6-5 Bluffton victory. Emily Kurtz went all nine innings to record her sixth win of the season.
Heather Thornton ripped three singles to lead the BC offense, while Shelly Wymer collected a triple, single and scored two runs. Erin Cook added two hits and scored two runs.
BC is scheduled to play at Defiance on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. HCAC double header.
