Salzman Stadium History
Dwight Salzman, Class of 1926 From the stadium dedication program... The fact that Bluffton College is playing football on campus in its own stadium for the first time in history is due in part to the vision and generosity of Dwight Salzman. Last year a bequest of more than $250,000 from the estate of Dwight '26 and Hazel Burkholder x23 Salzman designated half the gift toward a new stadium. He was a long time BC supporter whose idea created the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 1974. A resident of Greenville, Ohio, he was a teacher, coach and administrator at several southern Ohio schools. His BC major was biology. He was a member of the first track squad at BC in 1923. His best events were the 440 and half-mile runs, and he captained the thinclads. He also played football for the Beavers, manning the fullback slot. Most of his teaching career was at Greenville, where he taught physical education and coached track for 21 years. He was principal at Ansonia High School from 1945-59, and held a similar position at Franklin-Monroe High School from 1959-64. He started an athletic hall of fame at Greenville High School prior to providing the impetus for a similar project at BC. Since 1970 the Salzman Relays have been run in Greenville each spring, having been named for their founder.
