Transylvania University joins Heartland ConferenceJanuary 24, 2001The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its newest member yesterday as Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, became the eighth member of the league. Transylvania joins area schools Bluffton College and Defiance College in addition to the College of Mount St. Joseph from Cincinnati and four Indiana schools, including Anderson, Franklin, Hanover and Manchester. Transylvania is currently a provisional member of the NCAA Division III and competes in 15 varsity sports. The Pioneers do not compete in football and will be adding a volleyball team for the first time next fall. Transylvania, an NAIA school, will be granted full NCAA status in 2004, at which time their athletic teams will be permitted to compete in HCAC championship tournaments that determine NCAA tournament automatic qualifiers. Transylvania has been nationally ranked in men's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving and women's softball.
