Bluffton College Athletics Timeline

A timeline of historic dates at BC in the 20th century.


· 1905 BC's first football team.
· 1916 BC's first athletic facility, "The Barn," is built and is home for basketball games for over 30 years.
· 1917 BC holds a "football funeral" following the announcement that football was no longer be allowed at Bluffton College. It returned in 1923.
· 1923 A.C. Burcky graduates from BC, becomes school's first athletic director, and coaches at BC for the next 40 years.
· 1924 BC wins it's first men's basketball conference championship
· 1932 BC wins it's first football conference championship
· Feb. 5, 1952 BC wins their first basketball game in their new gymnasium, Founders Hall, 61-59 over Ashland in overtime.
· 1956-63 BC goes on an eight year run in football with an overall record of 53-17-1 and eight straight conference championships.
· 1959 Football legend Elbert Dubenion graduates from BC and goes onto ten year career with the Buffalo Bills.
· 1965 Ken Mast concludes his final football season at BC, having won a school record 88 games.
· 1968 Women's intercollegiate athletics return to Bluffton College
· 1973 BC makes it's first appearance in the NAIA men's basketball national playoffs.
· 1975 Induction of the first class into the BC Athletic Hall of Fame.
· 1981-82 Women's basketball teams sets win record with 16-9 season.
· 1982-90 BC wins seven conference championships in women's volleyball and goes to the NAIA national playoffs six times.
· 1984-85 BC sets men's basketball win record with an 18-10 record.
· 1985-89 BC goes on a five year run in football with an overall record of 38-10 and two trips to the NAIA national playoffs.
· 1986 The Emery Sears Athletic Complex is built, home to baseball, track and soccer.
· 1987 Baseball team finishes fourth in district and ties school win record with 18.
· 1987 BC volleyball team sets wins record with 38-4 overall record.
· 1989 Men's soccer teams sets best winning percentage with 9-5-1 overall record.
· 1990 BC leaves the NAIA and joins the NCAA.
· 1993 Salzman Stadium, home to BC football, is completed.
· 1994 BC makes first of three appearances in the NCAA national volleyball playoffs.
· 1997 Kim Fischer retires from BC having won 521 volleyball games.
· 1998 BC joins the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
· 1999 BC wins the HCAC softball championship
· 1999 BC wins record eight games in women's soccer.
· 1999 Football coach Carlin Carpenter ties school wins record with 88.
