BC Golfers have high hopes, not high scoresBy Tony Vasko, SID InternMarch 20, 2000 With a good nucleus of returning players, a new coach, new equipment and a new home course things are looking up for the Bluffton men's golf team this season. First year coach Allen Curtiss said, "We have the ability to be better then the team last year. We have new equipment to practice with, so hopefully that will help us on the course." Returning from last year's team are senior Robert Halker (Ottawa/ Pandora Gilboa), sophomore Andy Bixler (Orrville) and junior Josh Zechman (Northwood). Halker has been the #1 player on the team since he was a freshman. "These players have the ability to be good golfers," said Curtiss, "The key to this season is our short game. We have a lot of players that can put it out there a long way, but we have to get it the hole when we are around the green." Also on this year's team are senior Aaron Barrett (Springfield/ Shawnee), junior Scott Coffman (Castalia/ Margaretta), freshman Zack Green (North Baltimore) and freshman Brian Rufenacht (Archbold). This years schedule is tougher than last year's schedule and the team plays against a lot of scholarship schools, according to Curtiss, but the team should compete well. Coach Curtiss said, "We are judging success on individual improvement. If we improve our games individually, then we can improve as a team." The Beaver golf team opens the season in a weekend tournament at Manchester March 31st and April 1st.
