North Central squad features Wells, Phillips
The Cardinals posted back-to-back wins earlier this month and field a balanced attack of veterans and newcomers for third year head coach Bob Bray, who has started eight different players thus far in the young 1999-2000 campaign.
Yulander Wells, a 6-0 junior guard, leads the North Central College Cardinals into the McDonald's Tournament, already having scored 20 or more points in three games this season while averaging 17.7 points per contest. Wells hit for 15.1 points and 3.8 assists per game last year as a sophomore on his way to being named All-CCIW.
NCC's main outside threat, 6-2 senior Eric Phillips has nailed a team-high 19 three-pointers this season and averages 10.6 points per game. He also is the leading assist man for the Cardinals and is a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line this season, best in the CCIW.
Joining Wells in the backcourt is 6-2 junior Dan Hughes, who missed most of last season due to injury, forcing Wells to run the point. A pair of 6-5 Cardinals, senior Brian Lee and sophomore Andy Bohn, man the interior for Bray.
Lee, who was an All-CCIW defensive back for the North Central football squad as a junior, is shooting 52% from the field this season and averages 7.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He also has team-highs with 15 blocked shots and 13 steals. Bohn is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game with a team-high 6.3 rebounds per outing.
Dan Rohlfing, a 6-8 forward, averaged 11.4 points per game last year and led the team with 5.1 rebounds per game and 21 blocked shots. He has started just four games this season and is averaging 3.8 points per game.
North Central's 81 point performance last Wednesday against Aurora was their highest output of the season. The Cardinal's have been hampered in the points department, shooting a conference low 39% from the floor and 30% from three-point land. Their 66.0 points per game is eighth in the CCIW, as well.
