Entering his 22nd season at Bluffton College, Greg Brooks has reloaded his 2002 BC squad for a run at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title. With four seniors playing their last season and a talented freshman class, hopes are high that the Beavers can improve on last season’s seventh place finish in the HCAC.
Brooks is Bluffton’s all-time winningest baseball coach with 252 career wins. His teams have posted double-digit wins 16 seasons and he has won at least 15 games six different years. Brooks led BC to the NAIA District 22 playoffs four times in the 1980s and twice to the Association of Mideast Colleges tournament runner-up spot in the 1990s. Brooks also serves as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the BC football squad. He is a 1977 graduate of Ohio University, where he was a quarterback for the Bobcats. Brooks received his master’s degree from Marshall University in 1979. He is an assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation at BC. |
A familiar face to BC baseball fans returns to the squad this season as Vince Wakefield ’97 joins the Beaver coaching staff. A pitcher for Bluffton from 1995-97, Wakefield will concentrate his efforts with the BC pitching staff in 2002.
Wakefield brings enthusiasm and a history of success with him to the program. As a senior he helped lead BC to a 14-14 overall record that included wins over quality programs including Eastern Mennonite, Findlay, Thomas More and Ohio Northern.
Wakefield’s father Dan was the head coach at BC for one season in 1980 and fashioned a 9-6-1 overall record (.563 winning percentage).
Wakefield has been associated with BC athletics since his graduation in 1997 with a degree in chemistry. His wife Sara ’98 has been the head volleyball coach at Bluffton since 1999. They live in Bluffton and are the proud parents of a daughter, Olivia, born last August.
