Beavers lose to Cedarville University in extra innings

BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Bluffton University baseball team (4-12, 1-2 HCAC) was defeated by Cedarville University (5-10) 7-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday, March 29.

The game was a tight one to start off as there was no score through three innings. Cedarville knocked out three runs in the top of the fourth and another lone run in the top of the sixth to go up 4-0. The Beavers answered back in the bottom half of the inning to score one run and squeeze the Yellow Jacket’s lead to 4-1. Cedarville then scored two more runs in the top of the eighth only to find Bluffton post two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to be down by three 6-3.

The Beavers held off CU in the top of the ninth to head into the bottom half of the inning. Cedarville walked four straight batters and Bluffton scored three runs to tie the game at six all and head into extra innings. The Yellow Jackets scored one in the top of the tenth inning to make the score 7-6 without the Beavers being able to come back in the bottom for the final.

Leading Bluffton on the outing was junior Tony Gerig (West Unity/Hilltop) three hits and a double. Freshman Kyle White ( Berne, Ind./South Adams) posted one hit and two RBI’s. Senior Jason Moore (Elida/Elida) posted one hit, two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Freshman Will Gerber (Apple Creek/Central Christian) picked up the loss on the mound to take his record to 2-1 for the season. Freshman Brandon Freytag (Wapakoneta/Wapako-neta) started the game and pitched six innings. Freytag gave up six hits, walked three and struck out one batter.

The Beavers will be back in action on April 1 and 2 when they play Anderson University in their Heartland Conference series. The game on April 1 will be played at AU with the games on April 2 being played at Sears Field. The doubleheader on the April 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m.
