Beavers beat Earlham 13-3, drop HCAC series to Mount St. Joseph

   The Bluffton College baseball team (7-22, 2-10 HCAC) traveled to Earlham College last Wednesday and defeated the Quakers 13-3. The Beavers dropped all three contests to Mount St. Joseph on the weekend 26-15, 3-2 and 17-9.

   Junior Ryan Fiely (Greenville/Greenville Sr.) leads the Beavers in hits with 33 for the year and posts a team-high .351 batting average. Senior Bob Heitkamp (Ft. Recovery/Ft. Recovery) raised his batting average to .343 with two doubles and two home runs in the MSJ series. He now leads Bluffton with a .686 slugging percentage. Senior Kyle Alberson (Berne, Ind./South Adams) leads Bluffton in several offensive categories including total runs (22), doubles (12), home runs (7), RBI’s (27) and total bases (66). Alberson is currently hitting .340 for the season. Seniors Luke Clouse (.328) and Scott VanEman (.325) are the other Beavers batting .300 or better.

   Senior Josh Underwood (Bluffton/Cory-Rawson) currently posts a 3.04 ERA for the season with a 5-2 record on the mound. Underwood’s statistics include 55 hits, 14 walks and 32 strikeouts for the season. He has faced 210 batters in 53.1 innings pitched for an opponent batting average of .262. Underwood currently ranks fourth in the Heartland Conference with his 3.04 ERA and second in innings pitched.

   The Beavers show a .276 team batting average (.403 slugging percentage) for the season with 79 errors for a .919 fielding percentage.
  
Bluffton College will be back in action at home this Wednesday for a single 9-inning game against Ohio Northern University. Game time is scheduled for 4 pm. The Beavers will then be on the road on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Franklin College for the HCAC series. Friday’s game time is scheduled for 4 pm with the Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
