Baseball team wins one on week; Underwood picks up second victory on mound

   The Bluffton College baseball team (3-8) picked up a lone win against Otterbein in the week with a 2-1 win in Saturday’s doubleheader. The Beavers dropped last Wednesday’s contest 14-2 and the second game on Saturday, 10-1 both to Otterbein. Bluffton will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to Muskingum College for a doubleheader. Start time for the contest is scheduled for 1 pm.

   Senior Scott VanEman (Elida/Elida) is currently on a nine game hitting streak, and lead Bluffton in hitting with a .382 batting average, posting 13 hits for the season. Junior Ryan Fiely (Greenville/Greenville Sr.) hits .359 and leads the team in hits with 14 for the season (.718 slugging percentage). Fiely and Senior Kyle Alberson (Berne, Ind./South Adams) both post four home runs and 10 RBI’s to lead the team. Rounding off the top hitters for Bluffton is Tony Gerig (West Unity/Hilltop) with a .276 batting average and Alberson with a .257 average.

   Senior Josh Underwood (Bluffton/Cory-Rawson) threw his second victory on the mound in Bluffton’s win against Otterbein. Underwood currently shows a 4.58 ERA, leading the Beavers in innings pitched (19.2), batters faced (29) and strikeouts with 14 for the year.

   As a team Bluffton posts a .254 batting average and .414 slugging percentage. Defensively, the Beavers show 19 errors for the season with a .942 fielding percentage. From the mound, the pitchers combine for a 6.98 ERA with 56 strikeouts and a .300 opponent batting average.
