Baseball reads to third grade students at Bluffton elementary

In the mood of the Christmas season, baseball head coach James Grandey wanted a way for his players to give back to the town and people that support him throughout the year.
Grandey made arrangements with Bluffton elementary school teacher Andy Armstrong for his team to come and read to his third grade students. The project will be an ongoing service day for the
“Not only is it beneficial for the children that we read to, but it is very fulfilling for our players in becoming young men,” Grandey said. “The opportunity to read to a third grade class was a great way to give back to the Bluffton community.”
The players met with students in Mr. Armstrong’s class and read a book about helping at home and then went over a lesson after hearing the story. The children were very attentive and talked and joked with the players throughout the time they were in the classroom.
“I think this is a great idea for my kids to see the college students,” Armstrong said. “I think it’s good to have a positive influence for children. Having the players read is a great influence for them.”
The players will rotate who will read each time they return to the classroom. With a larger size team, only six can read a day. By the end of the season Grandey wants his players to understand and have the fulfillment of giving back.
