Moore, who received the A.C. Burcky Award, is the first quarterback in Bluffton football history to be named first-team all-conference three years and ended his career with 5,085 yards passing and 37 touchdown passes, both of which rank third all-time at BC. His 912 yards rushing rank second among quarterbacks and he set a new career record for lowest interception percentage at 2.6%. He was twice nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America Team and was involved on campus as a resident advisor and member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes steering committee. A communication major, Moore carries a 3.4 grade point average.
Phillips, who received the Kathryn E. Little Award, is the first women’s tennis player at Bluffton to earn first-team all-league honors since BC joined the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1998. She competed at No.1 singles last fall and has been involved in Hall Association, Phi Lambda Theta, Bluffton Choral and the May Day Musical. A middle childhood education major, Phillips carries a 3.7 grade point average.
Ruggley, who received the Larry W. Jones Award given annually to a non-athlete in recognition of support of BC athletics, is a resident of Bluffton and attends nearly every Bluffton College sporting event. She is loved by the BC student body and is well known for her good-natured cheering and unmatched memory of birthdays.
The awards ceremony was preceded by a message from Dr. J. Denny Weaver, BC professor of religion, who spoke on ‘The Sport of Life.” Weaver, who has been Bluffton’s faculty athletics representative since 1984, touched on experiencing perfection, self-discipline, perseverance and cooperative competition and related how being a college student is much like being an athlete in training.
A.C. Burcky served as Bluffton’s athletics director from 1922 through 1968 and was a charter member of the BC Hall of Fame in 1974. He was inducted into the NAIA National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and was named Professor Emeritus of Physical Education when he retired in 1968. Kathryn E. Little served in the HPER department from 1958 to 1974 and was instrumental in making the women’s athletic program what it is today. She was also a charter member of the BC Hall of Fame in 1974. Larry Jones graduated from Bluffton College in 1970 and was a varsity basketball player while at BC. He later served as an athletics official before being killed in an automobile accident in 1978.
