Building and grounds
It is not difficult to understand how valuable the winners of the Larry Jones Memorial Award for the year 2002 are to the athletic department. Imagine football, baseball, softball and soccer fields without lines, with their grass unmowed and full of weeds. Imagine how games would start late because coaches and players had to set up equipment during the week and even during weekends. Image Founders Hall and Salzman Stadium filling up with trash that was not cleaned up after games. Imagine Founders Hall and the Sears Athletic Complex without the beautiful shrubbery and flower beds. With Founders and Burky gym among the most heavily used buildings on campus, think how quickly they would collect dirt and debris and how the weight room equipment would be covered with salt and sweat. Imagining how badly our teams and facilities would fare without any of these things shows why the Buildings and Grounds staff is honored with the Larry Jones Award.
Because of their support of Bluffton College athletics in general, and their ongoing, dependable, and highly competent work in employing students, maintaining facilities and assisting the athletic department in countless other ways, it gives me great pleasure to present the Larry Jones Memorial Award for the year 2002 to Darrell Huber, Lori Dee Anderson, Lynn Basinger, Ronald Epp, Lamar Evans, Gretchen Gingrich, Melvin Gingrich, Gary Michael Hutchinson, Lawrence Kinn, Sharon Knepper, Roger Luginbuhl, Frederick Rodabaugh, Charles Scribner, Charles Sullivan, and Sarah Woods. Congratulations, to everyone of you!
Food service
It is not difficult to understand how valuable the winners of the Larry Jones Memorial Award for the year 2002 are to the athletic department. Imagine players dressing for games with growling stomachs because no one was in Marbeck for a pre-game meal, listen to the sounds of empty stomachs rumbling on long road trips because there were no sack lunches to eat in the van. Think how unimpressed prospective student-athletes and their parents would be when they received nothing to eat on sports recruiting days. Contemplate a team awards dinner with bare tables, imagine inducting distinguished alumni into Bluffton College’s Athletic Hall of Fame without a sumptuous banquet. Since teams travel on their stomachs, those images are hard to imagine and it is easy to see why the Bluffton College Food Service is honored with the Larry Jones Award.
Because of their support of Bluffton College athletics in general, and in particular their cheerful, dependable, and sumptuous work in preparing team pre-game meals, road meals, food for all kinds of special occasions, and in employing students, it gives me great pleasure to present the Larry Jones Memorial Award for the year 2002 to Ken Von Lehmden, Jeff Shockey, Norma Sue Ackerman, Janete Bibler, Deborah Bowyer, Carol Falk, Colleen Haugh, Diane Huber, Lisa Karn, Carolyn Karr, Jodi Thomas, and Ellen Von Lehmden. Congratulations, to everyone of you!
