Carlin Carpenter led the Bluffton football team for 24 years before retiring following the 2002 season. He was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference co-coach of the year following the 2000 season when he guided the Beavers to a 7-3 record, a national ranking and a share of the HCAC
championship. Coach Carpenter has led his teams to two NAIA national playoffs in 1987 and 1988. His 1985 and 1988 squads are already in the Bluffton University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Tom Reichenbach quarterbacked the Bluffton football team in each of the four seasons that he played. He led two of those teams to Mid-Ohio League Championships in 1956 and 1957.
Reichenbach lettered in four different sports in his career and was heavily involved with choir and theatre during his time at Bluffton.
Kelly Patton-Holder was a standout volleyball, softball, and basketball player during her career. In 1984 she was named the Bluffton female athlete-of-the-year. Patton-Holder was named to the first team Western Buckeye Collegiate Conference and NAIA District 22 in 1983 for her efforts on the volleyball court. She also was a member of the 1984 WBCC softball championship team.
The 1986 men’s tennis team consisted of a group of hard working individuals who came together in an amazing season to achieve what no other Bluffton tennis team has been able to repeat. The highlight of the season was that the team won the NAIA District 22 Tournament and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. Hugo Sandburg, Tony Mullet, and Mike Frey each received first team All-District 22 honors and Coach Pete Yost was named District 22 coach of the year.
