Athletic department announces annual award winners

BLUFFTON, OHIO – The Bluffton College athletics department announced the outstanding Former football player Jesse Williamssenior male and female student-athletes awards and the outstanding supporter of athletic teams and programs award on Thursday at the annual athletics forum. Senior Brad Boyles (Berne, Ind./South Adams), senior Laurel Miller (Gibsonburg/Colonel Crawford) and Willis Sommer, vice president for fiscal affairs, were recognized for their achievements.

Former Bluffton College football player Jesse Williams presented the address, “Athletics and Life.” Williams, who holds the career interception record (18) at Bluffton, is currently an ordained minister and the warden at Allen Correctional Institution in Lima, Ohio.

Boyles received the A.C. Burcky Award which is presented to the outstanding male senior Brad Boyles with AD and parentsathlete each year. Boyles, a three-year starter on the men’s basketball and tennis teams, has been a leader on and off the court for the Beavers. He was selected as All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and earned the title of Most Consistent Player for Bluffton in basketball this season. Boyles posted a 58.2 field goal percentage for the season, which placed him at 27th in the nation. He tallied 804 total career points in basketball, which places him at 33rd in the all-time leading scorer’s list. Boyles is a communications major.

Miller was awarded the Kathryn E. Little Award which goes to the outstanding female senior Laurel Miller with AD and parentsathlete each year. Miller has been a leader on the Beavers track and field team for the past four years. She was selected All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2002 and 2003 and was the HCAC triple jump champion in 2002. She holds the indoor and outdoor triple jump record for the Beavers and the record for most career HCAC championship points with 48. In 2002 she was also a member of the tennis team where she earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Scholar-Athlete award. Miller is a middle childhood education major.

Sommer was presented with the Larry W. Jones Award which goes to the outstanding Bluffton Willis Sommer with Phill Talavinia and Sara WakefieldCollege supporter of athletic teams and programs each year. Sommer is currently the vice president for fiscal affairs at Bluffton with a career at the school that spans 20 years. Sommer can be seen at many athletic events on the sidelines or in the stands rooting for his favorite Beaver sports team.

A.C. Burcky served as Bluffton’s athletics director from 1922 through 1968 and was a charter member of the BC Hall of Fame in 1974. He was inducted into the NAIA National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and was named Professor Emeritus of Physical Education when he retired in 1968.

Kathryn E. Little served in the health, physical education and recreation department from 1958 to 1974 and was instrumental in making the women’s athletic program what it is today. She was also a charter member of the BC Hall of Fame in 1974.

Larry Jones graduated from Bluffton College in 1970 and was a varsity basketball player while at BC. He later served as an athletics official before being killed in an automobile accident in 1978.
